At ESB Science Blast we are curious about how the world works. Across each episode of ESB Science Blast TV, join us as our presenters, Clara Murray and John Sharpson, along with our science expert Mark Langtry, investigate the science behind questions that we have previously received from schools
We want your class to be inspired by science and to see that science is everywhere!
In this episode we learn about the principles of flight. We visit the National Flight Centre and Dublin Airport where we talk to two pilots to find out the basic principles behind flight. John shows off his flying ‘skills’ and we get to see the flight desk of an Airbus. We also talk to our Special Guest Rollercoaster Engineer Korey Kiepert, designer of the Cú Chulainn rollercoaster at Tayto Park, about how rollercoasters are made and why you don’t fall out of a rollercoaster when you go upside down.
Mark shows us some great small-scale experiments, demonstrating the principals of centripetal force and gravity, that you can easily carry out with your own class. His final experiment will take everything we have learned about gravity, friction and centripetal force and super-size it, which will leave John feeling very nervous!
Curriculum topics including force, gravity and friction are covered in this episode.
Curriculum strand: Energy and Forces Strand Unit: Forces

Our resources below (PDF) have additional information for you to go through these principals in more depth with your class, tips on how to carry out the experiments and tips to get your class asking their own questions for their own ESB Science Blast investigation. This episode is not to be missed!
