Over 12,000 primary school children took part in ESB Science Blast in 2019.
It’s easy to get involved! All you need is a simple question that the whole class can investigate the science behind, with three FREE national events to showcase their work at. It’s a brilliant way to cover the science curriculum, but it has so much more offer. Each investigation will ensure that every stduent in your class gets to grips with the 4 Cs of STEM education: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communications.
Whole Class
Science Blast works by the whole class investigating a question together. It equips them with fundamental science skills: critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration. Fundamental skills for science, but also fundamental skills for life. The classes work on their investigation in the school before presenting their findings at a national event alongside over other primary schools from all over the country.
Shows
There are also brilliant science-themed shows for all participants to enjoy which are specifically designed for 8-12 year old audience. Each venue is a safe enclosed space, meaning an easy time for all teachers and support staff on the day.
Research
Independent research has shown that there are many benefits to involvement: science and maths skills benefit greatly as you might anticipate, but so too do oral and literacy skills. Overall confidence is also given a significant boost – the students are questioned about their findings by judges (who don’t evaluate as the event is non-competitive, but they do award each class with a trophy at the end of the day). By giving each student a positive experience at this young age, no matter what the education expectations of each student, their family, or the wider community, we try to ensure that each one of them realises that STEM subjects, careers and interests can be for them. Bring your class and have a blast!
About
Why take part in ESB Science Blast?
Science is a huge and vital part of our daily lives. Why not build your classes' confidence in maths and science through an amazing hands-on experience from the safety of your own classroom. ESB Science Blast encourages children’s natural curiosity, asking them to investigate the science behind a simple question using essential 21st Century skills.
Get Involved
Just start with a question. The best questions are often the simplest! Have you ever wondered how boats stay afloat? When you look in a spoon, why are you upside down? Why do our fingers go wrinkly in water? Does music affect how we feel? Have your class pick a question on a topic that they are interested in and follow our guidelines all the way to your findings.
